my philosophy of art education...
As an art educator, I believe it is my responsibility to prepare my students for life in today's competitive society. I feel it is my duty to expose my students to a vast array of information that will instill a great desire for learning in each and every one. Art teachers should be getting our students ready for the future and the challenges they will face. Necessary skills and information should be taught in order to prepare the students for a successful transition into their adult lives. Many students leave the security of their schools not having a clue of how the "real world" operates. This is why I am a strong sup
The arts can provide a unique and rewarding addition to a students' knowledge base without creating stressful demands, helping to add an interesting twist to a sometimes boring subject, and creating a way to reach students that would otherwise slip through the cracks. Every child should have an opportunity to experience an education that will have a positive effect on the rest of his or her life. Regardless of cultural background or diverse learning needs, each student should be given the chance to reach their full potential. Art education allows students to better understand people of other cultures, increases student self-esteem, and increases critical thinking and problem solving skills for students not capable of creating and understanding higher-level ideas and concepts in ways that other subjects do not allow.
The process of integrating academic subjects and art education will require the art educator to be knowledgeable in a variety of areas. My past work experience and my exposure to a variety of art media will allow me to teach my students in a more competent manner. In addition to being an art educator, I am also an active artist. I work in a variety of areas including clay, metal, wood, drawing, graphic design, painting, printmaking, stained glass and drafting. My artwork contains personal meanings, allowing me to express my innermost thoughts in a nonverbal format. I plan to share my art knowledge and life experiences with the students, helping to guide them through the processes needed to have a more rewarding experience in the visual arts.
Visual art, by itself, has an important place in the education of our students. Visual arts can expose students to other cultures, historical events and touch a part of an individual's mind in ways no other academic subjects can. The aesthetic qualities of such subject matter can touch people in different ways and bring out hidden interests that spark a desire for learning that would not have been ignited otherwise. As we embark into the 21st century, our students need to be able to think, solve problems, and function in a technological age. As educators we need to help our students meet the challenge.
We must remember that art is more than "old paintings and dead guys". It is an exciting subject that enables students to appreciate the natural and man-made world around us. Looking at the world through an artists' eyes makes one appreciate things for what they are and what they could be.
Art education should be a significant part of today's curriculum, helping our students to develop the skills needed to survive in the 21st century. As a society, we should provide our students with the information needed to stay competitive in the world market. The arts have the capability to enrich the lives of today's students making them productive adults in the future. Students exposed to a variety of career options are more likely to make an educated choice and be more successful. We need to provide our students with choices, and the arts should be among them.
porter of art/vocational education. These classes give students hands-on experience that will en able them to explore possible career options. After working in the competitive workplace for 15 years, I have seen the need for training in the art/vocational field. Any subject that you can teach children, that they naturally enjoy, can help them to choose a career that they will treasure for a lifetime.
